Abstract
This research applied an interdisciplinary approach to examine the relationships of self-efficacy theory and to identify those factors that predict performance for Ironman™ and ½ Ironman™ triathlon events. In a series of three studies, five hundred and thirty three triathletes were assessed for triathlon performance history, kinanthropometric dimensions, and sport psychological constructs. Further, laboratory-based exercise physiological measures of aerobic ability were conducted in the first two studies. All these constructs were measured prior to the actual event. The results were assessed for concurrent and predictive validity using ANOVA, MANOVA, discriminant, correlation, multiple regression analyses and path analytic techniques. The aim of Study I was to weigh a set of predictive constructs for triathlon performance, using constructs from the domains of sports psychology and exercise physiology that had the potential to explain performance more adequately than existing models. The results showed that in more experienced (in terms of time of participation in the sport) triathletes total event performance was more adequately explained by self-efficacy statements and performance history constructs. The aim of Study II was to validate the results of Study I, to investigate the criterion and predictive validity of the Physical Self-Efficacy Scale (PSE, Ryckman, Robbins, Thornton & Cantrell, 1982), and to compare this instrument to more task-specific measures of self-efficacy that are sensitive to the orientation of performance and outcome. The set of predictive variables established using correlation and regression analyses in Study II were similar to those in Study I. The results showed that the PSE was found to have no criterion and predictive validity. Task specific measures of self-efficacy (outcome and performance) did display criterion and predictive validity and the actual predictions of performance (self-estimations) made by the triathletes, were more accurate predictors of triathlon performance. The third study examined the causal relationships hypothesised in Bandura's model. A path analysis was conducted to test the relationships in self-efficacy theory with respect to the present data. The results highlighted the causal and mediational effects of self-efficacy on performance found in controlled settings and support the hypothesised role of self-efficacy in Bandura's (1986) social cognitive theory.
