Students' 2006 Study Tour to Japan

For the students who are studying Japanese, the 10th study tour to Japan has been organized by the School of Arts and Sciences, Australian Catholic University.

The aim of the study tour is to deepen understanding of the Japanese language and culture through maximum exposure to both of these in their natural environment. maximum exposure to both these in their natural environment.

A total of fifteen students from across four campuses, from New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland can participate in this program which is incorporated with the Study and Cultural Exchange Program offered by the Global Communication Centre at Shohoku College: Sony Institute of Higher Education in Japan.

During the 19 days, the students along with traveling and sightseeing will be involved in a range of activities. They will be attending some language classes and lectures, and many culture classes e.g. tea ceremony, Japanese cooking. Exchanging with many groups of students of Shohoku College through different activities. They will participate "Junihitoe"(ancient kimono) demonstrations, Traditional Japanese dance(Sato-Kagura), and Mochi-tsuki. The excursions to the ancient city of Kamakura with temples and Sensoji shrine, Asakusa in Tokyo, Sony Media World (in Tokyo) etc. Students will also meet the Mayor of Atsugi-City.

ACU is supporting the English Speech Contest to be held at Shohoku College and an ACU prize will be awarded to an excellent contestant. Our students will also be auditing the event.

All students and the accompanying lecturer will be accommodated at one of the Sony Company dormitories at the site of Sony Atsugi Technology Center, 4-13-1, Asahi-cho, Atsugi-shi, Kanagawa-ken, 243-0014, Japan.(It is 1hr express train trip from Tokyo CBD) The accommodation is a fully-secured building and has very well appointed boarding facilities. All single rooms with ensuite.

Students will be experiencing home stays with Japanese families over one weekend (3 nights). The host family (mainly the college's students' families) includes local citizen of the Atsugi-City.

The candidate of this study tour program is eligible to enrol in the unit: HUMA223 (1- Unit Overseas Project 1) for the Semester 1 in 2006, if she/he wishes to undertake. The unit is supervised by H.Asakura (MSM) and S. Lucacevich (St. Patrick's).

The group will be accompanied by Ms. Asakura, Program coordinator, lecturer in Japanese Language Studies (NSW), for the duration of this highly educational tour.

(Draft) Tour Cost per student: AU$2500*

Includes:

  1. Return Airfare and taxes
  2. Tuition and all specified activity fees
  3. Accommodation
  4. Meals (breakfasts and dinners from Monday-Friday)
  5. Train and coach fares for excursions and specified activities
  6. Transfer costs to and from Narita Airport
  7. Home stay (3 nights)

NOT included: Travel insurance, some lunches and meals on weekends.

Selection criteria for applicants:

Age between 18-25. Current students of Japanese courses at ACU will be given first priority, and past students of Japanese courses, students in related subjects and students interested in Japanese life and culture respectively. However this tour is open for all ACU students. Please note: Travel arrangements with Japan are as such that there are no disabled or similar special arrangements available as the continuity of the tour group is essential. Portage is up to the individual student. We look forward to hearing from you.
