ASSIGNMENT & STUDY QUESTIONS
1. Prepare a talk for senior high school students or young adults in which you situate Jesus' life and ministry in the social, political and religious world of his time.
2. "Jesus understood his mission in terms of the proclamation and embodiment of the kingdom-community of justice, love and peace."
Prepare a unit of work on this theme with particular reference to the parables and miracles of Jesus.
3. How did Jesus set abour reforming the religion of his day? Why do you think this resulted in his tragic death?
4. Each of the Gospels preserts us with a different interpretation of the historical Jesus. Present a portrait of Jesus that is presented to us in one of the Synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark or Luke). What does this say to us about the difference between "Jesus of history" and "Christ of faith"?
5. "What is unquestionably unique about Jesus is the result of his life and work. This culminates in the resurrection and the foundation of a movement that endured."
Evaluate this statement and present your own assessment of the uniqueness of Jesus and the Jesus-movement.
6. Explain how Jesus came to be understood as Christ, Lord and Saviour in the post-easter period and in the early centuries of the church. How important do you think these classical understandings of the Christ mystery are for Christians today?
7. Christian faith has always proclaimed Jesus Christ as 'saviour' of humanity and the world. In what ways does the Jesus story and the Christ mystery relate to contemporary human experience in an evolutionary universe?
8. Today, Jesus is interpreted as defender of the oppressed, advocate for women, and upholder of social justice values. Are these approaches valid? Comment especially with reference to the Gospel stories.
9. Provide a portrait of the historical Jesus which situates him in the Jewish society of his time, explains the nature of his life and mission, and accounts for his tragic fate.
10. In the light of some contemporary issue, movement or concern, what aspects of Jesus' earthly life and the Christ mystery need to be highlighted for a fruitful christology?
