About Bakırköy ...
Bakırköy is a middle classsuburb of İstanbul, Turkey on its European side.
Located on the northeastern coast of the Sea of Marmara, Bakırköy is a densely populated residential area and an important shopping and trade center for İstanbul. The Atatürk International Airport, which serves İstanbul, is located here. Among the interesting structures in Bakırköy is the Veli EfendiHippodrome, built in 1913 for horse racing. Known in the days of the Roman Empire ( 44 B.C.-A.D. 1453) as Hebdomon, Bakırköy became a popular residential area in the late 19th century after the construction of a railroad connection to İstanbul. The centre of Bakırköy has many bars and cafes and the seafront is a popular location for clubs and restaurants. There is also a ferry boat service that takes passengers to Bostanci on the Asian side of the city and also to the Adalar ( Islands).
The historical significance in the area, among others, includes an Armenian church and school and the resting place of the Muslim saint Zuhrat Baba, a Turkish soldier who died during the conquest of Constantinople. His resting place is often visited by women on Fridays.
