ACTIVITIES FOR VISITORS
If you are visiting the Hunter Valley be sure to enquire about a tour of the "Sacred Spaces" associated with the Singleton Mercy Convent, 30 Queen St Singleton. Here you will find, set in spacious gardens, a group of buildings of unique atmosphere, heritage and beauty.
The Old Cottage Museum (1848)
This small late-Georgian cottage is of considerable interest as part of the early history of the Hunter Valley. Contructed to a quaint design, it is octagonal in shape with a verandah all round, two hexagonal rooms forming the interior, and a cellar below. It has successively served as the first Catholic Presbytery, the first Convent, a music center – and is now the Sisters of Mercy Museum.
The Convent (1892-1909)
This very fine building is well worth a visit. It was designed to be the "Mother House" of the Sisters of Mercy in the Hunter Valley and is striking in its elegant simplicity, its generosity of space, its quiet, calming atmosphere reflecting the lifestyle for which it was designed. The design is the work of the notable Hunter Valley architect, F.B. Menkens. As well as witnessing to the life of religious women in former times, the building has many interesting architectural and aesthetic features.
The Chapel (1925)
The Sisters' beautiful Chapel has to be seen to be believed. Built to a design of architect Thomas Silk, it is a unique and thoroughly inspiring experience. It houses a pipe organ, now beautifully restored and believed to be one of the oldest in Australia.
Features of Particular Interest Include:
- The Convent setting of beautiful gardens and lawns, spacious verandahs and cloisters.
- The cedar joinery throughout the Convent building.
- The stained-glass windows, marble altar and statues, paintings and historic photographs.
- The display of the original Menkens architectural drawing of the plan for the Convent.
