ABOUT THE COLLECTION

The Singleton Convent Collection resides in a number of rooms throughout the Convent:

a cabinet in the Meagher Collection The Meagher Collection
Located in the room called "St. Joseph's" in Singleton Convent, this collection of books and journals was bequeathed to the Congregation by Rev. Peter Meagher, an Irishman, who was appointed the irremovable rector of the Singleton parish. Meagher's appointment in Singleton lasted for thirty years (1893 – 1923) and in that time he became closely associated with the Congregation. Meagher was both a scholar and pastoral man and this is reflected in his library collection which encompassed a wide variety of topics from the popular to the academic, secular to the spiritual. This collection is well known in its own right and therefore a valuable piece. It is a good example of a library collection belonging to an Irish – Catholic clergyman of the 19th century.

The Reception Room Collection
This collection reflects the diversity of subjects and disciplines, both spiritual and secular that have assisted in the formation and education of Sisters of Mercy. This is a special collection of older and modern, rare, "show-case" books.

St. Columkille's Corridor Collection
This is a pre-1940 collection of spiritual books housed in the corridor that links "St. Joseph's" to "The Reception Room" and "Refectory" in Singleton Convent. Whilst these books are not necessarily rare they are of value to the Congregation because they reflect aspects of congregational life from the time the Sisters arrived in Singleton.

The topics represented in this collection include Bible, Christology, Mariology, Church History, God/Trinity, Prayer/Meditations/Contemplations, Public Worship, Religious Life, Saints/Holy Men & Women, and Spirituality.

St Teresa's Corridor Collection
This collection of books is housed in the corridor linking "The Reception Room" to "The Community Room" in the Singleton Convent complex and comprises spiritual books old and new. Topics include Spirituality and History of the Sisters of Mercy, Religious Congregations and Orders, Saints/Holy Women, Writings of Famous Christians and God/Trinity.

the Community Room
The Community Room Collection
This collection of books is located in "The Community Room" of Singleton Convent in a series of eight presses. This is a general library of religious/spiritual books mainly published after 1940. The topics included in this library include Spirituality, Church History, Religious life, Public Worship, Sacraments and Other Rites, Mariology, Catechisms, Religious Training, Bible, Old Testament, New Testament, Gospels & Acts, Epistles, Ministry of Secular Clergy and Laity, Role of Christian Christology, Christian Doctrinal Theology, Moral Theology, Prayer/Meditations, and Human/Christian Development.

The Music Collection
"The Music Room" as it has been named, was originally where Sisters conducted music lessons in the early part of Congregation's history but in more recent years the room has been used for other purposes. The collection contains books, journals, periodicals, sheet music, manuscript, records and audio equipment of a musical nature. This collection indicates the emphasis given to music education and the importance of music as a spiritual and cultural expression. Topics in the collection include General Musical Works, General Principles & Considerations of Music, Dramatic Music & Production of Musical Drama, Sacred Music, Voice & Vocal Music, Instrumental Ensembles & their Music, Keyboard Instruments & their Music, String Instruments & their Music, and Wind Instruments & their Music. The collection also houses records, audio-cassettes of taped lectures relating to religion/spirituality, and fragile, hand-written manuscripts of the Sisters from Ennis, Ireland.

Solarium
The resources housed in the Solarium includes religious periodicals, journals, pamphlets, some religious fiction and general secular fiction.

Pre-1940 Collection
Both spiritual and secular books are housed in the small library press in the room adjacent to the Archives at Singleton Convent. Mostly published prior to 1940, these books fit the category of rare, archival or too delicate to be in the other collections.
