Some databases provide you with the ability to export references directly
from the database into EndNote without the use of a connection or filter
file. This allows you to use the full functionality of the database to
conduct your search, then simply select Direct Export to automatically
open EndNote and download the references into the library of your choice.
Direct Export is not available from all databases. The following database
providers have EndNote direct export options available for their databases.
Click on the database provider name below for more information
on using the Direct Export option to import files from these databases
into EndNote:
- Search AFI: American Film Institute Catalog as usual.
- Use check boxes to select the references to import.
- Click on Selected records at the top of the page.
- Click on Download citations.
- Click on ProCite, EndNote or Reference Manager. The EndNote
program will automatically open.
- Choose the EndNote library you want to add the references to.
- Log in to BioMed Central and perform your search as usual.
- Use check boxes to select the references to import.
- Change Endnote (no abstracts) to EndNote + abstracts.
- Click on the Send button. The EndNote program will automatically
open.
- Choose the EndNote library you want to add the references to.
- Search British Medical Journals Online as usual.
- Use the check boxes to select references.
- Click on Download to citation manager and then click on Go.
A new window will open.
- Click on Download citations to Citation Manager.
- Click on EndNote. The EndNote program will automatically open.
- Select the EndNote library in which to store your references.
- Search Cambridge Journals Online as usual.
- Use the check boxes headed Save/Export/View citation to select
the references to import.
- Click on Export citation near the top of the screen.
- Under Choose file format, click on RIS.
- Click on Download. This will automatically open EndNote on
your computer.
- Choose the EndNote library you want to add the references to.
- Conduct your search as normal.
- Add records of interest to the folder by clicking the
icon
next to them.
- Click on the
folder
icon . (It will say "Folder has items" next to the icon.)
- Click on Select: All.
- Click on Export.
- Use the radio buttons to choose Direct Export to EndNote, ProCite
or Reference Manager.
- Click on the Save button.
- Choose the EndNote library you want to add the references to.
Direct Export from Ed/IT Lib into EndNote
- Conduct your search as normal.
- Choose a reference you are interested in, and click on the View
Abstract/Citation link below its details.
- Click on Export Citation.
- Under Choose Export Format, select EndNote.
- Click on Download Citation. EndNote will automatically open.
- Choose the EndNote library you want to add the reference to.
- Repeat this process for each reference you are interested in.
- Conduct your search as normal.
- Click on the check boxes to select references.
- Use the radio buttons to choose Download to citation manager.
- Click on Go.
- Click on Download ALL Selected Citations to Citation Manager.
- Click on EndNote.
- Choose the EndNote library you want to add the references to.
Direct Export from ERIC
into EndNote
- Conduct your search as normal.
- Click on the Add link to select references.
- At the top of the page, click on Items in My Clipboard.
- Click on Export citation.
- Under Export Clipboard Citations, choose Citation Manager
File.
- Click on Download. EndNote will automatically open.
- Choose the EndNote library you want to add the references to.
Direct Export from FIAFFT: International Index
to Film Periodicals Plus into EndNote
- Conduct your search as normal.
- Click on the check boxes to select references.
- Click on Marked List.
- Click on Download.
- Under Download options, click on Export directly to ProCite,
EndNote or Reference Manager.
- The EndNote program will automatically open.
- Choose the EndNote library you want to add the references to.
Direct Export from Film Index International into EndNote
- Conduct your search as normal.
- Click on the check boxes to select references.
- Click on Selected records near the top of the screen.
- Click on Download citations.
- Under Export directly to, click on ProCite, EndNote or Reference
Manager. The EndNote program will automatically open.
- Choose the EndNote library you want to add the references to.
- Conduct your search as normal.
- Click on the check boxes to select references.
- Click on Marked Items near the top of the screen.
- Under Tools, click on Citation Tools.
- Use the radio buttons to choose Export to third-party software:
EndNote
- Click on Export.
- Choose the EndNote library you want to add the references to.
- Conduct your search as normal.
- Use the add to basket buttons to select references.
- Click on My Shelf to see the selected references.
- Click on the top tick box to select all these references again.
- Click on Selected, then on Save.
- Choose Record Format: Citation manager, then click on Save.
- Choose the EndNote library you want to add the references to.
- On the Google Scholar homepage, click on Scholar Preferences
next to the search box.
- Under Bibliography Manager, click on Show links to import citations
into and choose EndNote from the box.
- Click on Save Preferences.
- Search Google Scholar as normal.
- Click on Import into EndNote by the reference you want to import. If a download box appears, click on Open or OK.
- The EndNote program will automatically open. Choose the EndNote library you want to add the references to.
- Search HighWire Press as usual.
- Use the check boxes to select references.
- Click on Download to citation manager and then click on Go.
A new window will open.
- Click on Download citations to Citation Manager.
- Click on EndNote. The EndNote program will automatically open.
- Select the EndNote library in which to store your references.
- Search IIMPFT or IIPAFT as usual.
- Use the check boxes to select references.
- Click on Marked List.
- Click on Download.
- Click on Export directly to ProCite, EndNote or Reference Manager.
The EndNote program will automatically open.
- Choose the EndNote library you want to add the references to.
- Search Informaworld as usual.
- Use the check boxes to select references.
- Click on Choose an action, choose Download Citation and
then click on Go.
- Under Choose a Format, select EndNote Direct Export.
- Under Choose detail required, select Citation and Abstract.
- Under Choose delivery method, select Download file.
- Click on Go. The EndNote program will automatically open.
- Select the EndNote library in which to store your references.
- Search your chosen Informit database as usual.
- Use the check boxes to mark references.
- Under Citation, click on Save.
- Under Records to Save, make sure Marked Records is checked.
- Uncheck the Clear Marked Records after Save option.
- Under Label Format, select Short Field Labels.
- Under Fields to Save, select Complete Record.
- Select EndNote Direct as the Output Format.
- Click on Save Records. The EndNote program will automatically
open.
- Choose the EndNote library you want to add the references to.
Please note that some records exported from Informit will be given the
type "Generic" in EndNote. You should review all such records
and change them to a more appropriate type (e.g. "Report" or
"Film or Broadcast").
- Conduct your search as normal.
- Mark records of interest by checking the boxes to the left
of the citations.
- Click on Update marked list.
- Click on Bookmarking options at the right-hand side of the
page, then on Marked List.
- Click on Export options at the right-hand side of the page,
then on EndNote. EndNote will automatically open.
- Select the EndNote library you wish to use.
- The references are downloaded into your chosen library.
- Conduct your search as normal.
- Click on the HTML link of an article you are interested in.
- Click on Download bibliographical data.
- EndNote will automatically open.
- Select the EndNote library you wish to use.
- The reference is downloaded into your chosen library. (Nb: you will
need to repeat this procedure for each reference.)
- Create a JSTOR account if you do not already have one.
- Conduct your search as normal.
- Mark citations of interest by checking on the Save Citation
link beneath each one.
- Login to your JSTOR account.
- Click on MyJSTOR and then on Saved Citations.
- Click on Export article citations.
- Click on EndNote.
- EndNote will automatically open.
- Select the EndNote library you wish to use.
- The references are downloaded into your chosen library.
- Conduct your search as normal.
- Mark citations of interest by checking the boxes to the left
of the citations.
- Click on View Saved Citations near the top of the window.
- Click on Download metadata.
- Under Format, click on EndNote.
- Click Download paper metadata. EndNote will automatically open.
- Select the EndNote library you wish to use.
- The references are downloaded into your chosen library.
- Conduct your search as normal.
- Mark records of interest by checking the boxes to the left
of the citations.
- Click on Download to Citation Manager.
- Under Format, select EndNote.
- Click on Download article metadata. EndNote will automatically
open.
- Select the EndNote library you wish to use.
- The reference is downloaded into your chosen library. (Nb: you will
need to repeat this procedure for each reference.)
- Conduct your search as normal.
- Click on the Abstract link by a record you are interested in.
- Click on Add to Citation Manager.
- Click on EndNote.
- EndNote will automatically open.
- Select the EndNote library you wish to use.
- The reference is downloaded into your chosen library. (Nb: you will
need to repeat this procedure for each reference.)
Please note that you will need a filter file
when performing a direct import of records from Journals@Ovid, My
Journals@Ovid, OLDMEDLINE or PsycINFO.
- Conduct your Ovid search as normal.
- Mark records of interest by checking the boxes to the left
of the citations.
- Scroll down to the Results Manager at the bottom of the screen.
- Leave the Results option as Selected Results.
- Choose Complete Reference in the Fields section.
- Under Citation Format, select the Direct Export option.
- Click on Save.
- EndNote should automatically open. If a file download window appears,
select Open.
- Select the EndNote library you wish to use.
- If a filter file is required, select
the correct one from the list that appears:
- For Journals@Ovid or My Journals@Ovid, use the filter ACU Ovid
Journals at Ovid.
- For Social Work Abstracts, use the filter ACU Ovid Social Work
Abs.
- The references are downloaded into your chosen library.
- Conduct your search as normal.
- Use the check boxes to select references.
- Select Download to Citation Manager (on the right) and click
on Go.
- Click on Download all selected citations to Citation Manager.
- Choose EndNote.
- Select the EndNote library you wish to import references to.
- Click on Open.
- The marked references will be imported into your chosen library.
- Conduct your search as normal.
- Click on the Abstract link for a record you are interested
in.
- Click on Citation Export.
- Click on EndNote.
- Select the EndNote library you wish to import references to.
- Click on Open.
- The reference is downloaded into your chosen library. (Nb: you will
need to repeat this procedure for each reference.)
- Search Project MUSE as usual.
- Use the check boxes to select references.
- Click on Save Marked Results.
- Click on Email/Export Saved Results.
- At the Export Marked Records to: option, select EndNote.
- Click on Export. EndNote will automatically open.
- Select the EndNote library you wish to use.
- The references are downloaded into your chosen library.
Direct Export from Proquest into EndNote
- Conduct your search as normal.
- Mark records of interest by checking the boxes to the left
of the citations.
- Under Marked items, click on Export. (With ERIC, click
on View marked articles, then click on Export.)
- Click on Export directly to ProCite, EndNote or Reference Manager.
EndNote will automatically open.
- Select the EndNote library you wish to use. (With ERIC, you
will also need to select the Proquest filter.)
- The references are downloaded into your chosen library.
- Conduct your search as normal.
- Mark records of interest by checking the boxes to the left
of the citations.
- Click on Add to Marked Citations.
- Click on My Marked Citations at the top of the page.
- Click on Save/Print/Email/Download.
- Click on Export/Download to Citation Manager.
- Click on EndNote. EndNote will automatically open.
- Select the EndNote library you wish to use.
- The references are downloaded into your chosen library.
- Search ScienceDirect as usual.
- Use the check boxes to select references.
- Click on Export Citations.
- At the Export option, select Citation + Abstracts.
- Ensure the File Format is RIS Format (for Reference Manager,
ProCite, EndNote).
- Click on Export. EndNote will automatically open.
- Select the Library in which you want your references stored.
- Conduct your Web of Knowledge search as normal.
- Use the check boxes and then click Add to Marked List.
- Click on the records marked link.
- Use check boxes to select the fields to send to EndNote.
- Click on Export to Reference Software. EndNote will automatically
open.
- Select the library in which you want your references stored.
- The marked references will be imported into your chosen library.
- Conduct your Wiley InterScience search as normal.
- On the Search Results screen, use the check boxes next to each
result to select which references to import.
- Click on Download Selected Citations at the bottom of the page.
- Choose Format: EndNote and Export Type: Abstract and citation.
- Click on Go. EndNote will automatically open.
- Select the library in which you want your references stored.
- The marked references will be imported into your chosen library. Note
that italics (e.g. in Latin species names) will not import correctly.
Problems with Direct Export?
If you are getting a "File not found" message when you use
direct export, there may be a problem with your browser. Try clearing
the cache or deleting all cookies and temporary internet files stored
in your browser.
