EndNote

EndNote is one of a number of Personal Reference Database programs that are in use around the world today. The main functions of such programs are:

  • Generating a bibliography in the correct style for publication,
  • Maintaining a database of references,
  • Downloading references from other databases such as Ovid or Ebsco,
  • Supporting links to references in word-processed documents.

Endnote is a reference storage and management software package.

It acts as:

  • a reference, full text and image storage database
  • a place to store your notes on each reference
  • a bibliography and manuscript maker

ACU has negotiated a site licence for EndNote, which permits all members of the University to use the software both at work and at home. Academics, post-graduates and honours students, who need to deal with hundreds of references, will benefit most from this software.

EndNote X3 is available in both Windows and Macintosh formats.

Please Note: EndNote X3 is not compatible with Office 2010, go to the EndNote Office 2010 page for more information.

To be able to install Endnote X3, you will need the following minimum requirements:

  • Windows XP (SP3) or Vista / Mac OS X (10.5.x)
  • 450 MHz processor or higher
  • 256Mb RAM
  • 180Mb hard disc space

You can download EndNote X, X1, X2 or X3 if you are an ACU staff member or student. If you are asked for a product key, copy all the files onto your desktop and run them from there.

(Please note that once you have edited your libraries with one of these versions, they cannot be read by EndNote 5, 6, or 7.)

Although EndNote X is compatible with Vista, there are some known compatibility issues.

There is an error in the APA 5th style provided with EndNote X and X1. You can alter the style yourself to fix this.

The Harvard style provided with EndNote is not very comprehensive or accurate. We recommend you use the alternative Harvard style provided by the University of Queensland. Save the file in your Styles directory; by default, this is C:\Program Files\EndNote  X3\Styles.

For more information, please contact ACU's EndNote support team via the EndNote form.
