EZproxy FAQ - Firewall and SSL

A firewall is software or hardware that blocks unauthorized access to your computer or network. Most companies use a firewall to restrict access to their internal network. You may also be running firewall software at home if your computer is connected to the internet via DSL or a cable modem.

I have connection problems at work

Many corporate or government systems use a firewall for security purposes.

  • EZproxy requires an outbound connection on port 2048

  • Some of our database pages requires an outbound connection on port 9003

  • Access to port 443 is required for secure entry of your Username and password.

  • EZproxy is also configured for a secure connection, your workplace may be blocking access to secure webpages. If you cannot access such things as internet banking from your workplace, then it is quite likely that your employer is blocking access to secure sites.

  • A good webpage for testing SSL connections the URL listed below. If you can see this page then SSL connections are not blocked. If you can’t see the page, then your computer or workplace is blocking SSL connections.

Connection problems at home

Security measures (e.g. firewalls) on your home network may prevent use of a proxy server.

  • Please refer to the documentation that came with your firewall application, or contact the company directly via email, web, etc.

  • Please see the Connection problems at work area above for information on the required Firewall Settings

site blocked, unauthorised, connection refused, requested URL could not be retrieved

When you receive these errors in your browser, it often points to browser incompatibility or firewall and DNS issues. Some personal firewalls programs can disrupt access to our resources and other secure Web sites. Contact your Internet Service Provider for assistance with adjusting your firewall settings. Some users have reported that downloading the most current version of Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator solves the problem. Please email the Library via the feedback form and provide a detailed description of the problem you are experiencing, including your browser and version and Internet Service Provider.

This suggests that a firewall or workplace is blocking access to our site either by use of a firewall, port blocks, or is not allowing access to https sites (secure web connections)

Internet Explorer problems with secure servers

Some versions of Internet Explorer have problems with secure servers, such as we use to protect your username and password when you log in. We recommend that you upgrade to the latest version of Internet Explorer, which works better with secure servers.

In some cases, you may be able to get around the problem (at least temporarily) by clearing your browser's cache:

  • From the Tools menu:
  • choose Internet Options…
  • a window appears
  • in the "Temporary Internet Files" section
  • click the Delete Files… button
